The Immediate Life Support (ILS) course provides nurses with the essential skills and knowledge to treat adult patients in cardiorespiratory arrest for the short time before the arrival of a hospital resuscitation team or more experienced assistance (like ALS). ILS teaches recognition the recognition of deteriorating patients using the A to E approach. ILS knowledge and skills will enable first responders to detect and treat patients who may go into cardiac arrest.

Course objectives

  1. It also provides a platform for enhancement of problem-solving and decision-making skills, and team-based competencies like interpersonal and communications skills in scenarios with  medical emergencies and inpatients with impending cardiac arrest.
  2. Allows the trainees to receive hands on experience in essential skills in ILS without posing a risk to patient safety.
  3. This can be used as a tool that enables acquisition of practical knowledge, skills and attitudes to increase competence and preparedness to deal with an emergency.

Learning outcomes

  1. Understanding the role of human factors in resuscitation
  2. Use of Structured communication in acute setup using tools such as SBAR and RSVP and being able to understand the role of safety incident reporting.
